The DePuy Synthes Attune® Knee System only hit the medical markets a few short years ago, but it is already being seen as a cause for concern. A disproportionately large percentage of the 400,000 approximate U.S. patients who have an Attune® knee replacement are experiencing painful and dangerous side effects after the replacement failed.
Premature Attune® device failures have been linked to:
- Abnormal swelling in the leg and knee
- Difficulty standing, walking, or getting up
- Chronic pain, not always centralized in the knee
- Limited motion and flexibility
A team of nine orthopedic surgeons studied the Attune® Knee System to try to find the root cause of the apparent high failure rate. The findings were later published in the Journal of Knee Surgery. According to their statements, the Attune® Knee System uses a “tibial component” that rotates and flexes to alleviate some of the pressure placed on the implant itself from the patient’s own motions. However, the moveable portion of the device does not adhere well to bonding agents surgeons use to keep medical implant devices in place. As time goes by, not even a few years in some cases, the bonding agent becomes unglued, the device shifts out of place, and the patient experiences a painful and dangerous device failure.
In response to the findings that seem to show an inherent design flaw with Attune®, patients all across the country are looking into filing a claim against DePuy for compensation. People have demanded damages to cover medical costs, rehabilitation, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
