Super Lawyers is a legal directory that helps clients in each state find outstanding attorneys from more than 70 practice areas who have been recognized for their professional achievements and dedication to client satisfaction. Every lawyer mentioned on the Super Lawyers and Rising Stars list must be nominated by their peers and pass the organization's patented selection process.
The four main steps of the selection process include:
- Nominations – Super Lawyers annually invites attorneys for each state to nominate the top lawyers they have personally seen in action. Nominees are also selected by the organization’s research team, clients, readers, marketing directors, and other lawyers.
- Independent research – The research department at Super Lawyers reviews each candidate based on 12 indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement: case results, experience, representative clients, awards/honors, transactions, certifications/special licenses, position within the firm, community service and pro bono work, bar and/or professional activity, education/employment background, scholarly lectures/writings, and other notable accomplishments.
- Peer evaluation – Candidates with the most points from the previous steps serve on the “Blue Ribbon Panel” and tasked to evaluate other candidates in the same practice area.
- Final selection – Attorneys from small, medium, and large firms are selected.
While five percent of attorneys are named in the Super Lawyers list, only 2.5 percent of lawyers are selected to the Rising Stars list. Candidates are eligible for Rising Stars if they are either 40 years of age or younger or have been practicing law for 10 years or less.
